The Ebola epidemic seems to have returned, suspected to have infected nearly 30 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Only two cases have been confirmed of Ebola so far. The outbreak was reported to have started at least five weeks ago but has been officially confirmed on May 8th. The World Health Organization (WHO) has received 4,300 doses of an experimental Ebola vaccine, and are preparing to deliver it to the Congo, according to their regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti.

According to a recent estimate on Saturday, May 12th, the case is up to a total of 39 people- two confirmed, 20 probable, and 17 suspected. Of these, 19 people have died, including three healthcare workers. Moeti reported that after tracing those who had gotten sick, 362 contacts have been found. Of these, two contacts have traveled to Mbandaka, a large city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Experts are worried that since the Ebola has been officially identified, it could possibly spread there.

The goal is to prevent the spread of Ebola from getting uncontrollable, which is what happened in West Africa in 2014-2106. Ebola had killed more than 11,300 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Hopefully, the  WHO’s vaccines will prevent this from occurring again. Their experimental vaccine is expected to be deployed to people on Friday, May 18th.
