Speaker of the House Paul Ryan made clear on Wednesday, April 10th that he would not be seeking reelection in the 2018 midterms. Ryan, a Republican representative of Wisconsin, has served in the United States House of Representatives for 20 years and assumed Speaker of the House in 2015, becoming the youngest Speaker since James G. Blaine in 1875. Ryan typically holds conservative views on many issues, focusing on fiscal policy.

This announcement comes as a surprise to many as Ryan is third in line for the Presidency and holds a great amount of power in Washington. Three reasons exist for his departure. The first is that the House has been ineffective for the past few years. Secondly, there are fears that the Republicans will lose the House in the midterm elections. Lastly, Ryan has three children that he wants to spend time with. His exit, and the reasons for it, influences the mindset of other Republican representatives, who may end up feeling uneasy with their job and their future in the House.
