Track and Field State Championships

The NCHSAA 4A track and field championships took place on Saturday, May 9th at N.C. A&T State University.  The meet included a strong performance from several young Green Hope athletes on the girls and boys sides.

Elly Henes took first place in the girls 1600 and 3200, becoming the single most decorated individual athlete in Green Hope history.  She comments, “I was extremely happy with my race on Saturday. Those races made me realize how much all the hard training has paid off.” She adds, “It’s an honor to be the most decorated athlete in Green Hope history.” Henes’s time in the 3200, 10:39.47, set a new state record.  Elisa Sargent also competed in the girls 1600, finishing 11th.

The 4×800 team of Katie Tomasi, Kayla Hall, Sarah Taylor, and Emily Jordan placed 5th.

On the boys side, Henry Pehr shined in the 1600, finishing 3rd overall with a time of 4:19.32.  Pehr raced in the 800 as well, finishing 13th.  In the boys 400, William Hoffman took 7th place overall with a time of 49.86.

In the 4×100, Green Hope’s team of Trevor Chin, Javon Galloway, Austin Jackson, and Kwabena Sarpong placed 5th in the state.  The group’s time of 42.68 seconds set a new school record.

The lone Green Hope athlete to place in a field event on the day was Michael Renard, placing 11th in the discus throw.

Overall, the Green Hope girls team finished 9th in the state with 24 points while the boys team finished 24th with 12 points.
