The annual Paris May Day takes place on May 1st every year. This day is a public holiday celebrated in France to celebrate workers rights. This year in Paris, more than 100 people have been taken into custody after the protests turned violent. According to French police, 1,200 masked and hooded protesters dressed in black took part in the violent protests.

Some of the protesters were reportedly armed, carrying prohibited weapons and throwing projectiles. Many buildings were burned, destroyed, and graffitied due to the protests. Protesters smashed windows and kicked them in a McDonald’s restaurant. Other businesses, including a Renault car dealership, had damage done to it as well.

President Emmanuel Macron tweeted, “I firmly condemn the violence of the rogue demonstrations which took place today. We will do everything so that the perpetrators are identified and made responsible for their actions.”

These protestors were apart of a far-left anarchist group, the Black Blocs, who took control over an otherwise peaceful rally against French President Emmanuel Macron’s reforms of public sector labor.

There has been widespread frustration in labor unions over Macron’s reforms, some which have been going on for three months. Macron is adamant in his agenda and says he will not concede into their discontent.
