On Sunday, April 15, 2018, North Carolina experienced some severe weather. A tornado was reported to have touched down in Greensboro, with some extensive damage.

In Reidsville, strong winds picked up a mobile home and blew it about 100 yards to the other side of the street and into a vehicle. Minor injuries were reported.

Additionally, in Greensboro, a motorist was killed when trees toppled onto their vehicle.

The middle of April is a common time for severe weather. In 2011, the storm that occurred from April 14th to April 16th was documented as one of the biggest tornado outbreaks in US history. The system produced 178 confirmed tornadoes across 16 states and killed a total of 43 people.

It is important to keep in mind that spring brings a handful of severe weather, similar to how the fall brings lots of hurricanes. These systems are created due to the transition from winter weather to summer weather, which is why the weather will often be at one extreme the day before the storm and at another extreme the day after.

When a tornado watch is issued, this indicates that the conditions are favorable for a tornado. A tornado warning means a tornado has been spotted and you should take immediate shelter.

Stay on lower floors and away from windows. If outside, find a low-lying ditch. Try not to be on the road as a car can easily be picked up and blown around.

Be attentive and stay safe!
