Thursday, March 8th is International Women’s Day, with this year’s campaign theme being #PressforProgress. Celebrating International Women’s Day is a call to action for women’s equality. Around the world, many are apart of a global movement of activism and support. Through collaboration between men and women, the world could become a better place with ideas being heard and people speaking out.

Gender inequality affects us at even the high school level. Senior Kimmoy Boswell said, “Us women should have equal rights as men. I feel that we don’t get enough representation in certain careers and sports. My friend in Florida wanted to play football, but her school wouldn’t let her because she was a girl.”

If high schoolers experience gender inequality at this level, will they come to think that it is the norm? This is why awareness of gender parity is crucial. We are the future, and recognizing equal genders right now will help in creating a brighter future for all of us.

By using progressive action and working together, gender equality can be closer than ever. Women’s equality movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp are the first steps to gender parity in the future.

So how can we all contribute to worldwide equality?

  • Maintaining a gender parity mindset
  • Challenging traditional stereotypes and bias
  • Influencing others’ beliefs and actions
  • Celebrating women’s achievements
