Many towns and areas from across North America (including the United States, Canada, and Mexico) have submitted plans to Amazon, Inc. to build their new headquarters (sometimes known as HQ2) in their city. After narrowing it down and releasing a list of 20 finalists on January 18, Amazon is left with several options, with the Triangle still on the list. The recipient of a new Amazon headquarters will be near one of the following cities or areas (Amazon later released a statement saying that their headquarters would be located near one of the cities, not necessarily within the city itself):

  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Austin, Texas
  • Boston, Massachusetts
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Denver, Colorado
  • District of Columbia
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Miami, Florida
  • Montgomery County, Maryland
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Newark, New Jersey
  • New York City, New York
  • Northern Virginia
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Raleigh, North Carolina
  • Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Amazon’s existing headquarters is located in Seattle, Washington, and the company has plans to invest at least five billion dollars in construction with about 50,000 employees working in the new headquarters. A final HQ2 location will be announced later this year. The other cities in North Carolina that submitted proposals previously have been eliminated in the selection. Those regions were Charlotte, the Triad (Greensboro, High-Point, Winston-Salem), and Hickory. Whichever town is selected should expect an influx of population and many new technological advances within the next several years. If the City of Raleigh is picked for Amazon’s HQ2, the town can expect many positive influences, and quite potentially some negative influences.
