The best way to get into the holiday spirit is decorating! DIY crafts are a great alternative to buying decorations because they are usually pretty cheap and are more personal. You can use items that you already have and can easily be found around the house. Here are two easy DIY crafts for fall decoration.

  1. DIY Ombre Pinecones, adapted from Whimzeecal

Materials:

  • Medium sized pinecones
  • Acrylic paints in multiple shades of the same color
  • Angled paint brush
  • An old toothbrush

Directions:

  1. Take your toothbrush and clean off any dirt or bugs (recommend doing this step outdoor).
  2. Take your paint brush and apply the first shade into 1/4 of the pinecone (recommend starting with the darkest shade at the bottom of the pinecone and working your way up).
  3. Continue painting the next shade to the next 1/4 of the pinecone.
  4. Repeat step 3 with the rest of the shades until you reach the top.

  1. DIY Mason Jar Luminaries, adapted from createcraftlove

Materials:

  • Adhesive vinyl
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic paint (color of your choice)
  • Paintbrush
  • Mason jars
  • Ribbon/ Twine

Directions:

  1. Trace the shape of a maple leaf onto the adhesive vinyl and cut it out.
  2. Apply the smooth side of the vinyl to the mason jar.
  3. Apply acrylic paint to the whole mason jar. Allow the paint to dry all the way between each coat. (About 3 coats)
  4. Once it is completely dry peel off the vinyl leaf. Touch up any rough edges.
  5. Finish off with some ribbon or twine.
