A Letter to Men’s Cross Country

Dictated By: Colin Fegeley / Ghost Writer: Peyton Barish

Dear Men’s Cross Country,

There has been a lot of talk since the end of last cross country season about the men’s cross country program and the potential that you guys have.  Your team returns 6 of their top 7 and gained an extremely fast transfer in Ares Epps.  However, you guys have yet to race, and I’m starting to have my doubts about this program.  Much of the team is made up of seniors who will probably spend much of the time slacking off and suffering from varied cases of senioritis.

This summer Green Hope’s program has been touted as potentially the best team the state has ever seen by North Carolina Milesplit without having raced this season.  It does not matter that you return 4 boys ranked in the top 12 in the state, while most teams only have 2.  Just like other sports, the hype is just hype, until you prove that your team can run like one of the top teams in the country.  Having 3 of the top 6 runners in school history is great and all, but for all we know they are all injured and can barely break 20 minutes in the 3k.  I’m preparing myself for the disappointment of losing another cross country title to Broughton by 1 point.  They looked really good this past weekend, and I’m questioning whether you all can compete with them.  Now I understand that 5 of you guys ran a 3 mile time trial that would equate to a 16:00 5k, but that is not a meet situation.  During a meet you guys could succumb to nerves or someone could run you off the course totally killing your momentum.  I want to believe in you guys, but the lack of in-season experience just leaves massive amounts of doubt in my mind.  As they say I am hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.  See you in Oregon… Or Not!  Go Green Hope!

With Love,

Colin Fegeley
